Understanding the PIE Advantage
If the fund is a multi-rate PIE, your investment income is taxed at your Prescribed Investor Rate (PIR), which for NZ resident individuals is capped at 28%.
If you're on the top personal marginal rate (39% on income over $180,000), that PIR cap can improve your after-tax outcome compared to being taxed at 39% on the same income.
Tax-Equivalent Example
If we quote you a return of 8%, it can feel like roughly 1.18×8% to someone taxed at 39%, once you compare after-tax outcomes. This means your effective return is 9.44% p.a.
This comparison helps high-income earners understand the real value of the PIR cap when evaluating income investments.
